Diagnosed at 35, Driven to Change the Conversation.
In 2010, at age 35, Gabe Canales was diagnosed with low-risk prostate cancer — a form of prostate cancer that is typically slow-growing, confined to the prostate gland, and not likely to spread to other parts of the body.
That moment changed the course of his life—and became the catalyst for founding Blue Cure, a nonprofit organization dedicated to men’s health.
For more than 15 years, Blue Cure has reached men across the United States and around the world through media, advocacy, and honest storytelling. From bilingual campaigns and a 40-city national tour to statewide outreach and educational lecture series, the organization has worked to shift the conversation around prostate cancer—challenging the notion that it’s “an old man’s disease” and spotlighting the unique challenges younger men and underserved communities face.
Today, Blue Cure is a survivor-led, patient-focused nonprofit helping men and families navigate prostate cancer and men’s health with greater knowledge and confidence. Through conversations with leading physicians, researchers, and patient advocates, we make complex medical information more accessible, covering early detection, active surveillance, treatment options, sexual health, rehabilitation, survivorship, lifestyle medicine, and preventive health.
At its core, Blue Cure is about breaking down stigma and encouraging men to speak up, get checked, and take charge of their health.

Our Commitment to Patients
Blue Cure’s commitment to whole-person health began in 2010, following founder Gabe Canales’ prostate cancer diagnosis at age 35. During consultations with leading urologists, one physician introduced him to emerging research examining whether comprehensive lifestyle changes could influence the progression of low-risk prostate cancer.
That conversation inspired Gabe to seek out additional physicians and researchers at leading medical institutions to better understand the emerging evidence, its limitations, and the need for further research into nutrition, exercise, stress management, sleep, and environmental exposures.
At a time when lifestyle medicine received relatively little attention in public prostate cancer advocacy, Blue Cure helped bring these conversations to wider audiences through its educational Lecture Series, featuring speakers such as Dr. Dean Ornish, Dr. Margaret Cuomo, Whole Foods Market co-founder John Mackey, and environmental advocate Erin Brockovich. Alongside media appearances, community outreach, and Gabe’s 2013 TEDx Talk, these programs explored the connections between cancer prevention, lifestyle choices, environmental health, and medical research.
That commitment continues today. Blue Cure believes in a whole-person approach to health that recognizes the importance of healthy living alongside evidence-based medical care. Lifestyle interventions are not substitutes for appropriate cancer treatment, but they deserve serious consideration as part of broader conversations about prevention, treatment, and survivorship.
We also recognize that prostate cancer is not a one-size-fits-all disease. From active surveillance to advanced treatments, men and families deserve credible information about the full range of medical options, including advances in diagnosis and treatment.
Our mission remains rooted in independent, patient-focused education that helps men ask questions, understand the evidence, and work with their healthcare teams to make informed decisions.
About Gabe, Founder of Blue Cure
Gabe Canales founded Blue Cure in 2010 after being diagnosed with prostate cancer at age 35, despite having no symptoms or known family history of the disease. His diagnosis exposed him to the confusion, stigma, and difficult decisions that many men and families face when navigating cancer.
After consulting multiple urologists, Gabe chose active surveillance for his low-risk prostate cancer. Sixteen years later, he remains on active surveillance, using his personal experience to advocate for informed decision-making, second opinions, and greater patient involvement in healthcare.
As an author, TEDx speaker, and patient advocate, Gabe has spent more than 15 years bringing the patient perspective to medical conferences, community events, national and local media, and conversations with healthcare professionals. Through the Blue Cure Men’s Health Tour, educational lectures, and public awareness campaigns, he has encouraged men and families to ask questions, take an active role in their care, and use their voices to advocate for themselves and others when they feel called to do so.
Gabe is the author of Unexpected Diagnosis: Prostate Cancer and the Wake-Up Call to Live Healthier and Happier. His personal journey and commitment to lifestyle changes were featured in Anticancer Living by Dr. Lorenzo Cohen and Alison Jefferies, and he appeared in The C Word, a documentary executive produced and narrated by Morgan Freeman. These experiences reflect his longstanding interest in the potential role of lifestyle medicine in cancer prevention, patient well-being, and informed healthcare decisions.
In 2026, Gabe continued this work by speaking at two American Urological Association (AUA) events, emphasizing the importance of patient voices in healthcare conversations and the value of informed, patient-centered care.
Through the Blue Cure Men’s Health Podcast, he interviews leading physicians, researchers, and patient advocates on prostate cancer screening, active surveillance, treatment advances, sexual health, survivorship, lifestyle medicine, and other men’s health issues. His goal remains the same: helping men and families ask better questions, understand their options, and make informed health decisions.
In this TEDx Talk from 2013, Gabe shares how a prostate cancer diagnosis at 35 changed the course of his life—and led him to create Blue Cure.
