When Prostate Cancer Hit at 35, the Mission Became Clear

In 2010, at age 35, Gabe Canales was diagnosed with prostate cancer. That moment changed the course of his life—and became the catalyst for founding Blue Cure, a nonprofit men’s health movement focused on awareness, prevention, education, and support.

For more than 15 years, Blue Cure has reached men across the United States and around the world through media, advocacy, and honest storytelling. From bilingual campaigns and a 40-city national tour to statewide outreach and educational lecture series, the organization has worked to shift the conversation around prostate cancer—challenging the notion that it’s “an old man’s disease” and spotlighting the unique challenges younger men and underserved communities face.

Blue Cure promotes an integrative approach to health—emphasizing early detection, active surveillance, lifestyle medicine, and improved treatment outcomes. The nonprofit has collaborated with elected officials, public health leaders, and medical professionals to share this message through PSAs, community events, bylined articles, podcast interviews, and national TV and radio appearances.

At its core, Blue Cure is about breaking down stigma and encouraging men to speak up, get checked, and take charge of their health.

About Gabe, Founder of Blue Cure

Gabe Canales was diagnosed with prostate cancer at age 35, despite having no symptoms and no family history of the disease. At the time, he had never even heard of PSA. His diagnosis—and the confusion, stigma, and lack of resources that followed—led him to launch Blue Cure to help men of all ages become proactive about their health.

Rather than rush into surgery, Gabe sought multiple medical opinions and ultimately chose active surveillance, while transforming his life through diet, exercise, and stress reduction. His journey has since inspired thousands of men across the country to ask questions, seek second opinions, and take a more active role in their health.

Gabe has authored a book, delivered a TEDx Talk, appeared on national and local media, and traveled to more than 40 cities as part of the Blue Cure Men’s Health Tour. He also interviews top urologists, lifestyle medicine experts, researchers, and advocates on the Blue Cure Men’s Health Podcast.

In this TEDx Talk from 2013, Gabe shares how a prostate cancer diagnosis at 35 changed the course of his life—and led him to create Blue Cure.
