Nutritional Information for Grapefruit

Grapefruit has been popularized for helping people lose weight; however, grapefruit really doesn’t have any special powers that aid in weight loss other than being a fruit with beneficial components such as fiber, vitamins, and water. It’s a cross between an orange and a polelo. A little bitter in taste for some, yet many love the unique flavor grapefruit represents.

Cancer Prevention Benefits

Compounds in grapefruit known as triterpenoids have an ability to slow cancer growth. In vitro studies have found the triterpenoid, limonoid, to target hormone-dependant prostate cancer cells slowing their growth rate. Lycopene, the potent antioxidant mainly found in tomatoes, is also present in grapefruit. Research has shown men eating more lycopene-rich foods may lower their risk of developing prostate cancer.

In women, those eating more grapefruit appear at less risk for breast cancer. Note of Caution: Those taking the pill and eating grapefruit may increase the risk of blot clots.

Please tell your doctor if you are eating grapefruit and taking medications. The reason is phytochemicals in grapefruit can disrupt enzymes needed to clear toxins from the body. Since many drugs, yet helpful, have toxic compounds, it is important to have good clearance. Research suggests avoiding grapefruit for three days before taking any medication that may interact with it, but again, is very important to ask the doctor what’s right for you.
Eating whole fruit like grapefruit may help lower type 2 diabetes risk. However, drinking fruit juice seems to have the opposite effect and may boost the risk of diabetes. Grapefruit may also help lower blood cholesterol.

  •  Add to a salad for a tart flavor
  • Squeeze your own grapefruit juice
