UCI Medical Center continues to be an unparalleled resource in the region and the nation, offering an advanced level of health care only available at an academic hospital. The latest treatments, comprehensive outpatient services, new diagnostic techniques, as well as some of the most highly qualified medical professionals in the country, are right here in Orange County, at UCI Medical Center. This standard of care takes on special significance in the fight against cancer.
Our cancer program was established in 1989 as the only university based cancer center in Orange County. The UCI Cancer Center was quickly recognized for achievements in research and treatment, in 1990 being admitted to the Association of American Cancer Institutes and in 1994 receiving the coveted distinction of becoming a National Center Institute (NCI) designated cancer center and approved as comprehensive in 1997. Fifteen years later, and now named in honor of the Chao Family for their dedication and support of the Center’s mission, the UCI Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center is a world-class institution, containing fully integrated research, prevention, diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation programs.
Urologic Cancer Services
UC Irvine Health urologists deliver state-of-the-science diagnosis and treatment to patients with all types of urologic cancers, including tumors of the prostate, kidney, ureter, bladder and testicles.
Our urologists are renowned for their pioneering expertise in robot-assisted, minimally invasive surgery for prostate, kidney and bladder cancers. We use the da Vinci Surgical System®, which enhances the surgeon’s dexterity, precision and control.
We also are national leaders in the use of cryoablation to destroy tumors of the kidney and prostate by freezing them. This procedure, performed by urologists with the UC Irvine Health Ablative Oncology Center, can be done without incisions by guiding thin needles through the skin to the location of the tumor.
Working at UC Irvine Medical Center, Orange County’s only university medical center, our physicians offer the most innovative treatments and participate in leading clinical trials—giving our patients access to treatments long before they are available to the general public.
Our urologic cancer team of physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals are committed to providing personalized care delivered with professionalism and compassion.
